Spring Wee Read and Story Time
The Spring Wee Read and Story Time at the James Kennedy Public Library are set to begin Wednesday, February 1, 2012 and will run until Thursday, April 26, 2012. 

Wee Read is for infants and toddlers aged newborn to 3 years old.  Story Time is for children aged 3-5 who have not started kindergarten.  Wee Read is held on Wednesday and Thursday at 10:30 am and Wednesday at 6 pm.  Story Time is held on Wednesday and Thursday at 9:30 am and Wednesday at 6:30 pm.  Registration is required as space is limited.  Stop in or call the library at 563-875-8912 for more information.

Universal Class is a new service being offered by the James Kennedy Public Library.  Card holders have free access to over 500 online continuing education courses with subjects ranging from computer training to pet and animal care to music and painting to GED training.  Learn how to register and join other budding artists as we begin "How to Draw 101."  This course was designed for beginner artists who have an interest in learning how to draw or sketch--or simply want to improve their skills.  Registration is required as class size is limited.

SS. Peter and Paul Parish fish fry, Friday, February 24, 2012 at SS. Peter and Paul School.  Serving from 4:30 pm to 8:30 p.m..  Adults $9.50, children 5-10 $5.00, under 5 is free.  Menu includes fried or baked cod loins, baked potatoes, french fries, coleslaw, applesauce, rolls, homemade pies and desserts.  Altar and Rosary Society bake sale, too.  Carryouts are available by calling 875-7572.

Chililympics

Chililympics is a fun and entertaining winter event that had rave reviews last year!!!  Chililympics is slated for Saturday, Feb.  25th.  This event is perfect for those who want to compete and for those who don’t, for those who love to cook and for those who love to eat!  We are looking for teams to be a part of the fun: The Amazing Race (no you won’t be running) and Are You Smarter Than the Mayor.  We are also looking for people who make awesome chili to enter in our chili contest and for those who make delicious cinnamon rolls to enter in the cinnamon roll contest.  New this year is the salsa contest.

The Amazing Race will begin at 1 p.m. and Are You Smarter Than the Mayor at 3 p.m.   Teams, consisting of 4 adults, will come up with a creative team name and work together to complete against other teams.  

Registration fee is $20 per team per event.  Cash prizes will be awarded!  Other games will take place throughout the day! 

This is a call out to all of the kitchen chefs who make awesome chili – spicy or mild, or if you make great cinnamon rolls or salsa.  There is no entry fee and there are cash prizes.  And of course we need judges – YOU – to buy a ticket for $6, taste them all and vote for your favorite.  So come out have and some great food, entertainment and make some friends along the way as the public is invited.   Team or cook-off registration is required by Feb. 20th.  This event is hosted by the Dyersville Area Chamber of Commerce, call 563-875-2311 for more information.

James Kennedy Public Library Receives Grant
The James Kennedy Public Library in Dyersville, Iowa has received a grant award of $500 from Humanities Iowa, a state-based affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, in suppport of a project called "Tickled to Death:  Laughter Makes the Best Mystery."  "Tickled to Death" is a six-session bookreading and discussion program featuring mysteries with a touch of comedy.  The series will inlcude discussion of books by Sparkle Hayter, Jeffrey Cohen, Dana Stabenow, Carl Hiassen, Shary McCrumb, and Donna Andrews.  Meetings will start on February 28 and continue through mid May, with sessions on alternating Tuesday evenings at 7 pm.  Check the library's website at www.dyersville.lib.ia.us or contact the library at 563-875-8912 for more details.

Master Gardener Spring Seminar
The Dubuque County Master Gardeners will hold their spring seminar on Saturday, March 3, 2012 from 7:30 am to 2:30 pm at Northeast Iowa Community College, Town  Clock Center (680 Main, Dubuque)

Topics this year include water quality and quantity, rain gardens and water conservation, edible landscaping, vermicomposting, and conifers and companions.

Cost is $20 per person in advance and $25 per person at the door, including light box lunch and door prizes.  Pre-registration is encouraged.  Registration forms can be obtained by going to  Dubuque County ISU Extension website www.extension.iastate.edu/dubuque or by contacting the office at 14858 West Ridge Lane, Dubuque, 563-583-6496.  Deadline is February 28 for pre-registration so box lunches can be ordered.

Walk-ins the day of the seminar will be accepted if space allows.

St. Patrick's Day events
Gaelic Gallop:  8K run and 2K walk will start at 10:30 am at the Total Fitness Rec Center.  For more information,

Ride the Shamrock bike ride:  This annual event will kick off at the beginning of the Heritage Trail.  This ride is usually 17 miles round trip.  For more information, contact Lyle Theisen at 563-875-9405.

Parade:  The Ancient Order of Hibernians will sponsor the St. Pat's parade beginning at 1:30 pm from the St. Francis Xavier parking lot.  Anyone can enter and there is no entry fee.  Prizes are given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place floats and costumes.  To sign up, contact the Chamber office at 563-875-2311.
